Engaging with Asheville’s Downtown Arts Corridor

During 2020’s summer months, a storefront on Broadway offered a glimmer of hope amid the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. While passersby couldn’t look through the covered windows at Momentum Gallery’s new home at 52 Broadway, the energy surrounding the space was palpable, with workers moving in and out with ladders, tools, and plywood, transforming the space into a new home for paintings, sculpture, and other works of fine art.

The activity contrasted sharply with the stillness felt along Biltmore Avenue as the newly expanded Asheville Art Museum, Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, Fine Arts Theater, and the Orange Peel remained closed, even as other businesses slowly reopened. At this writing, as Phase 2.5 begins and these institutions look toward reopening, visitors and locals alike will experience an unprecedented level of art, history, and creativity soon.
