You can officially check “Have a Grammy Award Winning guitarist play a ditty just for me” off your bucket list. We tapped Al Petteway—Dream Guitar team member and one of the Top 50 Acoustic Guitarists of All Time (really)—to pluck out a tune for us (and you!) in honor of the day of love.
Though you might recognize Petteway’s notes from Ken Burns’ documentaries or more than 60 recordings by the world’s most famous folk and Celtic musicians, these days Petteway’s occupied with a new style. “I have played guitar my entire life and have followed many paths,” the gitfiddler says. “In recent years, I’ve been playing mostly fingerstyle acoustic guitar. In my old age I’m just trying to have as much fun with playing as I possibly can.”
Having fun is just what he did with our assignment, passed on to him through Dream Guitars’ Paul Heumiller. “When Paul asked me to play something for Valentine’s Day, I was stumped. The first song that came to mind (as a royalty-free choice) was ‘You Are My Sunshine,’ Petteway smiles. “I had never played that tune before, but I knew it in my head and figured everyone else would, too. So, I improvised a lively fingerpicked arrangement for you. My whole goal was to have fun with it with hopes that the fun would be contagious.”
From lullabies to late-night love songs, Petteway’s arrangement brings to mind (and heart) our most sublimely nostalgic moments and memories of a lifetime of Valentines.
ABOUT THE GUITAR
Dream Guitars presents one of the most painstaking examples of Bourgeois craftsmanship in this 2016 L-DBO Presentation model. Number nine of an exclusive ten, this is the only guitar in the collection with Ziricote and Aged Tone Adirondack Spruce, an exciting blend of classic and contemporary tonewoods, and you’ll find that the rest of the instrument has been done up in high style with a rich bounty of Abalone and Pearl. The Ebony fretboard is almost completely covered with Pearl blocks, themselves inlaid with floral Abalone patterns, a motif you will also find on the wings of the bridge and the heelcap. Antique Walrus Ivory pins, Waverly tuners, and a tiger stripe pickguard for a flash of something off the menu.
A dark and moody sunburst spans the top, which sets off the Abalone trim, and the fact that this Bourgeois comes in a custom fit Hoffee flight case lets us know that this guitar will be safe for the long haul. In spite of this guitar’s trim dimensions, there is a fierce and lively quality to the L-DBO Presentation’s voice that gives the impression of a larger instrument. Instead of a plunky picker, we found real power and dynamism.
It’s an incredible find, to have an instrument whose gorgeous aesthetic is only matched by its voice. We cannot recommend this exclusive Bourgeois L-DBO Presentation more highly.
