The Growing Dog Daycare Industry Provides for Pets, Their People, and Local Entrepreneurs
Busy pet owners are increasingly availing themselves of dog daycare, and the industry is booming. According to a 2020 report, the pet grooming and boarding industry in the United States has doubled in the past decade, with 2019 revenue reaching some $9 billion.
The number of such businesses in Western North Carolina— more than a dozen in or near Asheville alone—is indicative of the strong and growing demand. Riverbird Research, a division of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, reports that for the 23-county region of Western North Carolina, the industry sector is represented by 97 payrolled business locations. As of 2020, those businesses employ 616 people, a figure that represents a 63% increase over 2015’s numbers, comparing favorably to a national increase of just over 45%.
