Unifi, Incorporated, a manufacturer of recycled fiber, divested itself of its 60% interest in Repreve Renewables, LLC. Repreve Renewables’ main product was Freedom Giant Miscanthus, otherwise known as elephant grass. It grows very fast to heights of 10 feet or so, and is thus a great source of biomass fuel. Another application has been for poultry bedding, a product Repreve branded as Thrivez. After eight years of developing the line, Unifi spun off the business to cut losses, not wanting to invest in the sales and marketing needed to make the grass profitable. While Unifi lost $1.66 million in the sale, it also reduced its debt by $4 million. Corporate leadership explained the company wanted to focus on its core polyester and yarn products. Unfortunately, sales of all yarn products have decreased, likely due to the closure and downsizing of American apparel retailers. 65 percent of Unifi’s yarn products are used in apparel and hosiery.
