JB Media Group, a digital marketing agency, is the seventh Asheville company to be awarded B-corporation status. B-corps, like S- and C-corps, have a legal responsibility to act in the interest of shareholders; the difference is, they must also demonstrate legal responsibility to stakeholders, such as employees, suppliers, customers, the community, and the environment. The certification of B-corps is handled by B Lab, the nonprofit that created the designation. The process is described as one that many companies start, but few finish. To qualify, applicants must score at least 80 of 200 possible points. JB Media had to add an employee handbook, create corporate policies, formalize its volunteer program, create a peer-review process, and set revenue goals. The company pursued the certification in a process that lasted almost a year, considering it the next logical step after realizing almost half of revenues came from nonprofits or purpose-driven businesses. JB Media is the 42nd B-corp in North Carolina, and one of over 2,000 worldwide. French Broad Chocolates, Mandala Naturals, Deltec Homes, Earth Equity Advisors, Cloud for Good, and Big Path Capital are Asheville’s other B-corps.
