A New Kind of Master Builder

Cannon Hartzog Marries Architecture & Construction with Asheville Design Company & Cornerstone Homes

In many ways, Cannon Hartzog is following in the footsteps of his family. The architectural designer and founder of Asheville Design Company is the youngest of three boys, and he describes his own personality as the byproduct of his two brothers: “The oldest is an engineer, the other is a professional musician, and I fall somewhere in-between.” It’s an evaluation that makes sense: Hartzog harbors a passion for both the artistry of architecture and the practicalities of construction. 

But perhaps his path was most greatly influenced by his father, who founded Asheville’s Cornerstone Homes in 1977. “Growing up around construction, I became familiar with the process,” Hartzog says, adding with a laugh, “You cannot be the son of a contractor and not spend a few hot days maneuvering some tools around or cleaning a jobsite.” While he always found the industry interesting, it wasn’t until his family built their own home that he became enamored with architecture and design.
