The Cliffs reported sales were up in 2016. Property sales totaled more than $119 million, up 40% from 2015, and membership grew by 221 to 2,890. The Cliffs is a network of seven luxury private club communities in the Upstate of South Carolina and Western North Carolina. Three sites are lakefront, three take advantage of mountain settings, and the seventh claims as its crown jewel proximity to Asheville. Each club is built around a nationally-ranked golf course designed by a famed golfer like Jack Nicklaus or Gary Players (or, until a bad economy and “that driveway incident” sank the deal, Tiger Woods). Each also has its own state-of-the-art wellness center staffed by experts, and each has its own special amenities, such as an equestrian center, a beach club, or a marina. People who live in one of the communities have access to any of the resources or 2,000 events a year hosted at any of the other communities. Founded in 1991 by Jim Anthony, the Cliffs was acquired by Arendale Holdings in 2013. Since 2012, more than $12.5 million has been invested in new amenities. Later this year, The Cliffs intends to launch an app for members that will allow them to schedule tee times, make dinner reservations, register for events, or request more exotic specialized service like carry-out food deliveries to the golf course or transportation from a boat dock to a clubhouse.
