Kristen Dake wanted to make gourmet cooking easy. Having everything already measured in one bottle beats buying a lot of spice bottles that never get used up or buying everything fresh, chopping, and drying. Either way, the next step would be finding and following a recipe, making a mess with all kinds of measuring utensils. So, she began pairing all-natural dry spices with select quality oils and steeping the mixtures for at least nine days. Steeping gives oils years of room-temperature shelf life so they can sit right next to the stove. Dake prepared blends reflecting Italian, Greek, Creole, Mexican, and Thai gourmet cuisine and began selling her Herb Infused Cooking Oils through Walk in the Park at farmers’ markets in Mills River. The oils are packaged in square, longneck glass bottles with decorative jute ties. Both the oils and the pastes of the same blends retail for $12.95 apiece. Now that Dake wants to expand her customer base, the cooking oils are being retailed on Mr. Checkout, as seen on ABC TV’s Shark Tank. Mr. Checkout is a group of independent distributors servicing about 35,000 stores. Bob Goldstein founded the company as a means of providing fast turnaround, right-size deliveries at a good price for convenience stores. Mr. Checkout’s wide range of supply-chain services for entrepreneurs include warehousing and price setting.
