The Catawba Valley Furniture Academy is advertising for enrollees in its Furniture Fundamentals class. The course, which runs for eight weeks, meeting for three hours four evenings a week, introduces students to various disciplines in the industry and is a prerequisite for admission to programs offered by the academy. Courses teach skills in pattern making, cutting, sewing, spring up, and upholstery. The curriculum includes plant tours, career previews, skill assessments, and hands-on training in a simulated furniture manufactory; and all classes are taught by artisans employed in the local furniture industry. Upon graduation, participants will be qualified to hire directly into high-demand/high-pay jobs. The academy recently underwent an expansion and overhaul, drawing on input from local industry leaders. The school was made possible by founding partners Century Furniture, Lee Industries, Lexington Home Brands, Sherrill Furniture, and Vanguard Furniture; and it is sustained by almost thirty other industry partners.
