New Belgium Brewing has received LEED® certification for all three of its Asheville-area facilities. Leadership in Energy & Environmental DesignTM is a third-party program of the US Green Building Council® that awards “medals” based on a point system. The Liquid Center tasting room earned a Platinum award because New Belgium helped remediate a brownfield on the site, partnering with the City of Asheville in stream restoration, greenway construction, and multimodal street upgrades. Materials from the deconstructed stockyard buildings onsite were integrated into the new building; and radiant floors, natural ventilation, light-emitting diode fixtures, and rooftop photovoltaics help reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Even the landscaping is designed with conservation in mind, featuring engineered bioswales, wetlands, and pollinator-friendly habitat. The brewery received a Gold designation for taking advantage of natural lighting and ventilation and capturing steam to recycle heat and water. Lastly, the distribution center received Silver recognition, mainly for using locally-sourced, reclaimed materials and conscious landscaping. A certified B Corporation, New Belgium gives all employees a bicycle after one year of service and provides them with paid bus passes, premium parking for bicycles, and charging stations for electric vehicles.
