Winter Lights @ NC Arboretum
December 2017 @ 6:00 pm - January 2018 @ 10:00 pm
The annual Winter Lights show is promising to have “more lights, new interactive displays and lower, more family-friendly pricing.” On display nightly Friday, November 17, through Sunday, December 31, 2017, from 6 to 10 p.m., Winter Lights is an outdoor walking tour of the Arboretum’s renowned gardens dressed with beautifully lit displays and glowing landscapes. Designed with an artistic aesthetic, Winter Lights is composed of nearly 500,000 energy-efficient LED lights and emphasizes the beauty of Western North Carolina during the winter season.
New features for this year’s event include interactive motion sensor games and light activities, as well as more lights, music and nature-themed displays added throughout the garden areas. Fan favorites will also return, including the Arboretum’s signature 50-foot animated tree and lighted Quilt Garden, as well as its family-friendly Rocky Cove Railroad and “Storytime at Woodland Cove” animatronic children’s program. Festive food and beverages, including hot cocoa, cider, s’mores, wine and beer, will be available for purchase, and the Arboretum’s Savory Thyme Café will offer a special dinner buffet for Winter Lights ticketholders.
Special offerings for Winter Lights include the Arboretum’s “Friends and Family” night every Tuesday. Tickets will be discounted to $15 for adults and $10 for children; Arboretum Society member discounts still apply. For visitors seeking transportation from Asheville and Hendersonville, The Trolley Company will once again offer its Winter Lights Holiday Tour every Friday and Saturday night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Trolley rides include a complimentary cup of hot cocoa, admission to Winter Lights and scenic rides filled with music and merriment to and from the Arboretum. Tickets for The Trolley Company’s Winter Lights Holiday Tour are $28.50 per person and must be purchased in advance through The Trolley Company’s website, www.thetrolleycompany.com.
For the second year in a row, the Arboretum will partner with the City of Asheville for Winter Lights Downtown, an artistic holiday light display in downtown Asheville’s Pack Square Park between the Vance Monument and the Hoss Haley Fountain. Winter Lights Downtown will commence with a special lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 18 at 6 p.m., and will be on display nightly through mid-January 2018. In addition to the light display, the Arboretum has partnered with the city to refurbish its downtown holiday wreaths with updated, fresh decor.
All tickets must be purchased in advance and are date-specific. Pricing is $18 for adults and $12 for children (ages 5 to 11), not including handling fees and required sales tax. Children age four and under are free. Group tickets are also available ($15 per person, minimum 20 people). Members of The North Carolina Arboretum Society receive a $2 discount on every ticket purchased.
